1. The Birth Of A Monarch Butterfly - And NPR’s Tumblr

It seems appropriate to kick of NPR’s little experiment on Tumblr with this photo from a commentary we posted yesterday on NPR.org. Artist Julie Zickenfoose shares her story about the beauty of watching monarch butterflies emerging from their chrysalis at her wildlife sanctuary in Ohio. There’s also an extraordinary time-lapse video (or is it stop-motion?) of a caterpillar metamorphosing into a monarch.

This isn’t our first foray on Tumblr - our friends at Fresh Air have been blazing the trail with their Tumblr, and a number of NPR staff have had their own Tumblrs for a long while - but this is the first time we’ve tried setting one up for NPR in general.

What can you expect to find on NPR’s Tumblr? Your guess is as good as mine. Given how Tumblr really excels at highlighting photos, quotes and the like, don’t be surprised if you see a lot of that here. Beyond that, we’ll have to see how the muse strikes us. (Gently, but with copious inspiration, I hope.) If you have any thoughts on the types of things you’d like to see us posting, please post a note and let us know.

So welcome to NPR’s Tumblr. I can’t promise we’re giving birth to a monarch butterfly here rather than, say, Gregor Samsa, but we’ll give it a whirl, see where this ride takes us, and hopefully enjoy other mixed metaphors along the way.

    Thanks,

    Andy Carvin, NPR
